Double A and Tree Planet’s Fun and Easy Way to Save the World

Bangkok, Thailand, _ July 2013 - Double A supports Tree Planet and its partners, United Nations (UN), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD),on their campaign to plant one billion trees by the year 2020, and to generate awareness among people that they can make significant contribution for a better world, in an easy and enjoyable manner.

A fun way to save nature, Tree Planet aims to be the world’s largest online tree planting application.  It allows players to raise trees online either through Facebook for PC or smart phone.  Once the virtual trees are fully grown, real trees will be planted by Tree Planet on behalf of the players, on their pre-selected location, which can be one of the following:Mongolia, South Korea or Thailand.

This initiative to increase the green cover of the world is consistent with Double A’s sustainable business model, thus, the sponsorship of ‘Tree Planet Season II – Spirit of the Trees’, which was launched in April 2013.

Mr. Charnvit Jarusombati, Double A Senior Executive Vice President said, “Tree Planet and Double A share the mutual goal of engaging people into tree planting.  In Thailand, our continued engagement with Thai farmers has made our ‘Paper from KHAN-NA’ program a huge success.  The trees grown by over 1.5 million farmers along KHAN-NA absorb carbon dioxide, and once they reach maturity, are converted into high quality paper and farmers’ sustainable source of income.”

Currently, Tree Planet is available in two languages, namely, English and Korean, while the Thai version is expected to be launched in July 2013. The game now has more than 300,000 users around the world and has already planted more than 250,000 trees.

“The consumers’ busy lifestyle has made them lack the time to do something good for the environment.  The advent of technology, however, has increased consumers’ accessibility to the cyber world.  Tree Planet app on Facebook and smart phone, therefore, is what we offer to consumers who are always on the go.  It is fun, accessible, and mobile”, added Mr. Charnvit.

Double A, Tree Planet and its partners inspire people to help restore the forest areas of Mongolia, and South Korea with native tree species.  If the players choose Thailand, they become part of a unique way to protect nature through Paper from KHAN-NA program, and help create a sustainable agro-forestry by planting paper trees along the unused KHAN-NA of Thai farmers. Double A has spent over 60 million Baht to invite people to play the game, and to prepare more than 10 million paper tree seedlings to be planted in Thailand. This program, if successful, could result in the reduction of 600 million kilograms of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Double A will also invite Tree Planet representatives and selected ten KHAN-NA Ambassadors to Thailand for them to witness the actual tree planting on KHAN-NA. They will also have the opportunity to learn about this sustainable model which allows Double A to produce paper without using any fiber from natural forest, increase income of Thai farmers, and increase Thailand’s green cover which helps solve global warming.

Double A is committed to achieving net zero emission across the value chain by 2050. The roadmap to reduce greenhouse gas emissions includes an increased usage of EV trucks for transportation of materials, as well as increased solar and renewable energy sources. By promoting the sustainability and ESG considerations– environment, social, and governance – Double A’s mission is to enable a greener and better world for all stakeholders by continuously adapting, innovating, and finding new ways in our value chain to utilize sustainable wood-base fiber resources. Sustainable Sourcing. The unique idea of planting paper trees on vacant strips of land between the rice fields and providing a sustainable source of raw materials for paper production, while fully utilizing agricultural land is the beginning of the Double A sustainability story. Only certified wood, or the fast -growing paper-tree that was developed specially for making Double A paper is used in the production process. These paper trees planted by farmers greatly help in absorbing carbon dioxide. Further, no natural forests are disturbed to produce Double A paper, contributing even more to environmental protection and conservation. Social Harmony. The farmers earn extra income by planting the paper trees. The additional income earned by the farmers goes back into the community, creating a positive impact on the grassroots economy of Thailand. Self-Sufficient. The leftovers from production process are turned into clean renewable energy. We utilize the “By product” generated from our production process; for example, Black liquor, which is the leftover after pulp production, is turned into Biomass energy. We also have plan to increase solar power utilization for production and electric vehicles for transportation so as to reduce greenhouse gas emission in another way. We also follow the 4R principles – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Renew, to build a self-sufficient factory, achieving net zero carbon emissions. As a result of our environment and sustainability focus, Double A has been certified by two global standards, FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification), assuring its customers that Double A paper is responsibly produced with sustainable raw materials, without harming mother earth. Lastly, Double A is proud to announce that it has joined the Thailand Carbon Neutral Network (TCNN) to partner with other companies whose goals are Carbon Neutrality that encourage Thailand to achieve its committed carbon target. “Despite the challenging net zero target, we strongly believe that our determination and cooperation with all sectors will get us there. Together, we can drive the country to achieve its goal of net zero faster” said Mr. Yothin
